LP2 Lincoln Formative Years Cent
The LP2 is known as the "Formative Years" cent (aka: Rail Splitter or Log Splitter penny) and was released in the second quarter of 2009. The LP2 commemorates Lincoln's years in Indiana from 1816 - 1830. The reverse side shows Lincoln reading while sitting on a log.
The LP2 Lincoln pennies are now SOLD OUT at the US Mint. Final LP2 production figures will be posted early in 2010. The value of the sealed two roll P & D boxes from the US Mint is sure to rise.
An unopened box of LP2 rolls from the US Mint is a must have if you plan on completing the four coin set. The earliest dated LP2 box from the US Mint that I have seen on eBay was 4/13/09. Please correct me if I am wrong and send along photo. These sealed boxes can be found for sale below and on eBay.
Many errors have been found on the LP2 pennies. An extra finger or thumb is not uncommon. This may increase the value of the Formative Years coin in time.
The US Mint boxes contain one roll of "P" (Philadelphia Mint) and one roll of "D" (Denver Mint) coins.
